Ben Walsh, Pro Freedom, Pro Choice

Benjamin Walsh LDP candidate for the Electorate of Deakin.

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.
 -Thomas Jefferson

My aim is to represent the community, not business, to reduce the need for government involvement in our everyday lives and to help Australia prosper as a beacon of liberty and equality.  Our policies unlike the major parties and their factions are to provide everyone with the opportunity and privilege of deciding for themselves aspects of their lives controlled by the government ever since any of us could recall. The nanny like attitude of the Australian government is what we seek to remove, in a free and liberal society people should have the right to govern what they do with their lives so long as it does not interfere or hinder the prosperity of fellow human beings. If you are a supporter of freedom, liberty, equality and freedom of choice then you too are a Liberal Democratic Party supporter.

The basis of a democratic state is liberty.

Politics fan gets into the action

10 Aug, 2010 12:00 AM
A YEAR 12 student with a keen interest in politics is hoping to prove that age is no barrier when it comes to leadership and success.

Benjamin Walsh has been selected as the Liberal Democratic Party candidate to run for the marginal seat of Deakin in next week's federal election.

Despite living in Pascoe Vale, Mr Walsh said a "dissatisfaction in the community", which he believed was apparent through Deakin's history of being a marginal seat, had attracted him to the electorate.

"I strongly believe that a new fresh political party is required, and I'm undoubtedly not alone when I say that the dissimilarities between the Australian Labor Party and the Coalition seem only to be decreasing.

"The electorate is tired of empty promises and the same policies and mentality from either party.

"Although I do not live in the electorate, I have noticed that a long-time issue for the residents has been the government's willingness to spend billions on unnecessary projects while neglecting those requiring seemingly immediate funding."

Although his youth could be seen as a disadvantage to his campaign, Mr Walsh hoped residents would vote on "policy and political philosophy".

"I must concede that I have thought about the possibility of being dismissed due to my age but, in some cases, I think it could be seen as an advantage.

"For instance, the first-time voters that have turned 18 since 2007 could feel they can associate better with a candidate of similar age rather than a 40-50-year-old director of a corporation.

"If anything, I would think that the charitable and kind-hearted nature of the people of the region would result in encouragement - an 'at least he's giving it a go rather than just complaining' sort of attitude.

"Although it would be great to be elected, I am a realist and aware this is very unlikely. But if the least I can do is make the public aware of the option to vote for our party, become familiar with Liberal Democratic philosophies and attract possible members, I think it is worthwhile."

Mr Walsh said he was managing his VCE commitment "well" while campaigning, but hoped, if elected, to have completed his studies before Parliament resumed.

And if elected? "I would strive to lower taxes, decrease government involvement in personal matters, and make some long-needed changes to legislation regarding permitting the individual's right to choice in terms of abortion, euthanasia and gay marriage."
